When you are on holiday, have you ever wondered how to bridge the gap from 6pm to dinner time? It seems a bit early to start on the wine, and a beer is not quite right...
Then I have the perfect solution for you - the Campari Gin. This was introduced to us by Antonio and Marco in the Caffetieria del Borgo in Papiano. It's essentially a Campari Soda with (you guessed it) Gin. It is in fact 2 of the three parts of a Negroni (the other being red vermouth eg Cinzano), and is the perfect cocktail to while away the hour after sightseeing and before dinner.
If this sounds a bit strong, then try the Campari Soda on its own, or its lower alcohol brother the Aperol soda. These reddy-pink drinks are the perfect 'aperiviti' and just tickle you with their tastes.
So, on your way back from visiting Perugia, Assisi or wherever, stop in at the Bar, order up and grab a table outside - as Papiano is a small village, they do not preserve the bar vs table price split that you see in cities. And you certainly don't have to settle the (remarkably small) tab until the end.
The old men of the village will usually scootch up to find a space for you, and you can watch the world go by. You'll be amazed at how much is actually going on...from the screams of the kids in the dentist, the driving by and tooting, the random parking of cars to pop by and say hello...and the continual stream of people in and out of the small tardis-like supermarket opposite.
The Campari Soda is also the perfect solution in a city..after a tough afternoon sightseeing, grab a pavement table on the Corso Vannucci in Perugia, or any main square, and order a Campari Soda, Aperol Soda, Prosecco...and watch the evening passeggiata go by. And, by the time the crowds fall away at 7.15 or so, well, then it's just right to consider a quick change before dinner. Perfect.
Just one thing..I can guarantee that you'll pay a lot more for your smart table drink than you will in Papiano!
