Sitting on the terrace, in 26C, gazing out at the hills of the Massa Martana, I can't help wondering if September is the loveliest time to visit...vying, perhaps, with May. Ok, at this time, the flowers are fading, the girasole black, and the nights finish at 7:30. The land, however, is still hot from July, and warmer than an English summer. The perfect temperature to visit hill towns, so you can linger, and don't feel oppressed by the heat. And, when you settle for lunch, it's still ok to choose to sit outside, though you might need a second layer - or this is the perfect time to scurry inside and try out the tables in the small back rooms of 'enoteche'.
So, what you gain in comfort, ok, you do lose in all-out warmth and lazy days. But hey - that's an even better excuse for a wonderful bottle of wine.
