Winemaking in Papiano

Every self-respecting country smallholder will have vines, anything from a few rows that produce for the family, up to a serious business selling grapes to the co-operative, local restaurants, and maybe even their own bottling.

Janet and I were out for a walk, and suddenly a callout from Gianmarco, here with his grandfather, crushing the latest harvest in his very small 'vineria'. Of course there is always time to try both the recently pressed juice, and also a final taste of last year's wine, which will have to sustain for another few months. It's hot work, hence the lack of shirts (!), and yet at the same time simple and pure.

On we walked then, back to the bar, where we bumped in to Paulo, on the left here, who insisted that we immediately come and see his vines, altogether on a different scale, as he has many hectares. So we jumped into his 4x4,

headed off to his vines..

and finally a taste of his very smooth red!

Then back to the bar..and what a day..
