Road trip - starting out..

Friday 22nd November arrives, and the move starts. We fit all of the things that we aren't taking to Italy in two large wooden storage containers, and by lunchtime we have a half-empty house. Then, Pete arrives with van number 1, and in go the leather sofas and many, many boxes..now all that is left are the boxes that we are planning to put in van number 2. We lock the door n Friday evening, and head round to spend the night with Keith and Pete. The final part of the jigsaw - selling the wine fridge at 9pm that night to a lovely chap called Richard. I sat in he garage in a garden chair, watching the leadership debates on my mobile phone...then he arrives and takes it away. Feels like the move is now really happening...

Saturday morning and I collect van number 2, after a brief walk through Romsey in the morning, feeling the strange sense that it will be a while until I do this again. Then we put all of the remaining boxes in the garage, so that the house is completely cleared out. This is when the reality of how much stuff we have starts to bite, and I do have a few wobbles as I realise that we are trying to fit a Quart...

into a pint pot...

and yet it is amazing how much did fit in - though we had to leave bikes, some garden items and, most disappointingly, some large terracotta pots that we had spent hours cleaning out! No time for sadness now, though. We are all packed by 5pm, and then a brief goodbye to the neighbours (and a plea for their help in dealing with the leftover items) and to number 23...locking the door for the last time in a long while givers a strange feeling..but, no time for too much sentiment, as we are off at 6pm to Portsmouth, in time for dinner and then the ferry at 10pm.

Arrevederci Romsey...
