The importance of having a post box..

For all that people accuse Italians of being disorganised, one thing that you cannot fault them on is their love of a good postbox or 'cassetta'.

Every house, flat, castle or stable, any habitable dwelling in fact, should proudly announce its owner. We have been sadly remiss in this respect, made worse when we had gates fitted, so that the 'Poste Italiano' could not even reach our old mailbox on the house wall, trapped behind the gates.

The solution? Well, they had started to deliver our mail to Aafke, a Dutch lady who lives in the village - presumably on the assumption that she would know who the 'other foreigners' would be. As it turns out, that is a good assumption - so we used to get the occasional message from Aafke saying that post had arrived for us.

Until today..we proudly show our new, solid postbox, names written clearly (in the format Surname, name..).

A delight was meeting Francesca the Post lady, who was very complimentary about our Cassetta. We also had our first re-directed post..so we must have arrived then!
