He hath brought forth persimmons...

Lovely Antonio at the bar disappeared conspiratorially (as he so often does..) behind the curtain into the back room, and emerged with a branch, laden with half a dozen fruits, which we had never seen before. The local name was 'Kaki' - not the most encouraging of names either. It is a strange fruit, which apparently will stay completely hard and unripe, right over the winter..and then the local 'trick' is to put a handful of them in a bowl with an apple or two, in a warm place, and then suddenly they ripen in a few days. Somewhat like avocados, they also go from 'hard' to 'ripe' to 'over-ripe' in about 30 minutes. The taste is very drying, sweet and savoury at the same time.
