Up and about for Santo Stefano (or Boxing Day in the UK - try explaining that down the bar!). A visit to Compignano, a small hill town about 4 km away, that organises a 'Presepe Vivente" or living crib scene. A number of locals had dressed up in Mediaeval garb, and recreated some of the scenes from village life many years ago - though some might actually have continued until the War. It was totally charming, especially as the light fell...
Village houses tend to have a 'Cantina' or cellar for food storage, wine bottling, tool storage (an early version of a 'Men's Shed'?!) and these are now quickly adapted with muslin and sackcloth to make the scenes very lifelike.
Entrance gate - soldiers

Town crier??

Donkeys and horses

the different trades...

Ironwork

Goatherd..

Cobblers!

Laundry
(ps this was very amusing - the lady in the grey scarf is not actually part of the event, but was very much involved in discussing the merits of the different types of coal-iron....and the lady in orange as totally charming)

Finally leading to the nativity scene - genuine donkey and baby!

And then a concert in the church.

A truly charming afternoon..and not the last Presepe Vivente for this Christmas season
