Satellite Internet...

Having become very used to 'Fibre to the House' in Romsey, and speeds of 130Mbsp, with hardly any latency or 'lag', then internet here in Papiano is something of a shock. I mean, it is not dreadful....I can get about 10Mbsp on my 4G phone - when I am standing in the right room, and only in the mornings when everyone is asleep. Down in the Piazza (where the bar, supermarket and post office are) there's no phone signal at all...curiously, unless you stand in the middle of the road - where you do see a small huddle of young folk clinging onto the meagre offering from Telecom Italia..

I now have a lot more sympathy for people in rural communities in the UK who complain of slow speeds..I feel your pain!

Thus it was that I have had a satellite system installed. Initially I wanted to get one of the radio systems, but alas they also don't work here, so it has to be a proper dish. Somewhat foolishly I forgot that I have limited technical skills, and thus I ordered a dish and modem from a UK company, a self-install. Getting it was hard enough, which ultimately meant a trip to DHL in Perugia..and then I was faced with the task of getting it fitted. 25 years of working for a DIY company counts for nothing.

Logic finally prevailed and I managed to engage a local installer, Fabio, who came and within 3 hours we were all fitted and up and running. A huge sigh of relief as one of my big stress things was mostly solved. There is a bit of a delay - well I guess half-a-second is not so bad when the signal has to travel 35,786 km there and the same again back!

A week or so in, and yes it is working fine, other than my Revo Supersystem does not like it at all, so we cannot stream Radio 4 directly now, but only via the computer. A small price to pay...
