It's fair to say that a visit to the Co-op hypermarket and shops of Collestrada usually fills me with an overwhelming sense of doom..it is such a vast, cavernous place, where hours can pass by. It is a death-eater of a place, and only to be approached occasionally when a wider selection of products is needed.
The one bright spot is the unusually good wine department, which I believe did once win a prize in Gambero Rosso (the acclaimed Italian Wine Guide) as one of the top 3 wine shop in Italy.
To be honest, it does rather lack the knowledge element - you can bring together a great wine list, but if you don't have someone to sell it - you are somewhat missing the point. €500 bottles of claret don't sell themselves!
Still, it is always a pleasure to peruse the shelves, and we usually come back with a few unusual treats.
